Asian Heritage Month: Colourism and its affect on Asian Women

Please join us for a virtual event on May 25th at 5:30 pm PDT where our guest speaker Anureet Lotay will cover the topic of colourism in popular culture and media; specifically on how it affects Asian women.

Anureet Lotay is a PhD candidate in Anthropology at The University of Victoria. Currently, Anureet is working on a project which uses ethnographic methodology to understand how migration, diasporic lifeways and cultural identity affect the health and reproductive lives of Punjabi-Canadians who must negotiate belonging within the Indian community, and within wider Canadian society, in their practices around reproduction, gender, family, and media.

The purpose of this talk is to shine the light the how prevalent colourism is in popular culture, even in 2022, and the impact it has on Asian Women. As well, we will be highlighting some of the shifts we are now seeing, where Asian women of different shades are now being featured much more regularly and in a positive light.
