Oral Histories: Bridging the Generational Divide

DEADLINE FOR INTERESTED ELDERS EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 25TH

The Support Network for Indigenous Women & Women of Colour (SNIWWOC) hopes that this project will be an opportunity to have both young Indigenous Artists and Elders come together to craft stories that relay Indigenous teaching in the way they used to be traditionally taught: in the form of a story. Our hope is then that either we could post these stories as a written collection (which would be up to the comfort and discretion of the participating Elders), or have them posted to Indigenous language sites and other resources for traditional teachings. We think that these kinds of artistic resources are a vital aspect to Indigenous Healing, especially to those who don’t have the ability to reach out to elders or knowledge keepers.

For Indigenous artists, this project will not only help them refine their writing skills, but will also offer a new experience that may shape their voices as Indigenous writers. This is an important project because it offers a link between Indigenous youth and Elders that has been a very hard thing to sculpt in today's age as the disconnect between those generations is so vast. It allows Elders the opportunity to voice their experience and their knowledge in an artistic way, and for young artists it’s a way for them to give back to the community by relaying these teachings that would otherwise go unshared and unspoken.

We are seeking up to 9 Elders and 9 Youth between the ages of 18-30. An Hononorarium is available to those who participate in this project, for both youth and Elders. Meeting dates will be set-up between the participants once signed up, and an Elder will be paired with a youth participant to record and share stories in the ways they see appropriate.

Sign up by emailing Cheyenne at cheyenne@sniwwoc.ca with subject line: ORAL HISTORIES PROJECT by November 15th, 2021.

Honorarium amount for youth: $450.00
Honorarium amount for Elders: $550.00
