National Addictions Awareness Week is November 21-27, 2021.
Join this discussion with healthcare professionals from Watari Counseling & Support Services Society on November 24th, 2021 from 2pm to 3pm PST, as we discuss the journey of change as it relates to addiction.
The journey of change for those in recovery can be filled with many ups and downs, and is a leap of faith into a world of possibilities. Join us to learn more about:
- Understanding what addiction is
- The risk factors for addiction
- Changes that happen during healing
- What new studies have to say about addiction
Change often begins within, and this session will focus on what it means to gather inner strength, while bringing awareness to addiction and its challenges. The road to recovery is never straight, and by discussing the challenges one might face, we hope participants gain an understanding of their recovery journey and or gain insight into someone else’s recovery journey.
Let’s create a safe space to discuss recovery and its challenges.
Speakers are Amen Brar and Veronica Doan joining us from Watari Counseling & Support Services Society:
- Amen started working with Watari in April of 2020 as a practicum student. She is now working as a Substance Misuse Counsellor for the CACT team and is currently working towards her Master of Counselling Degree. Amen has worked in the mental health field for over 12 years in a variety of capacities.
- Veronica's purpose as a substance misuse counsellor developed through her own journey, personal experiences and awakening, which included struggles with getting lost in her teens, depression after giving birth to her children, using substances to find happiness. She has traveled through darkness and light and eventually found the inner peace. She learned to accept who she is and others, to see goodness in everyone and beauty in everything.
SNIWWOC's mission is to support black, Indigenous women, women of colour, youth and children take greater control of their lives, providing culturally appropriate services in different languages. All of our programming is developed and delivered by women.
